Blog 18: Wednesday, December 2, 2015

In the novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, one theme that is present throughout the story is secrecy.

Bruno keeps secrets from his family, his family keeps secrets from Bruno, and there are secrets being kept from the entire world.

What are your thoughts on secrets? Can we live without them or is that impossible? When are secrets good/bad? Explain

In chapter 13 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Pavel was mistreated when he accidentally dropped the bottle of wine on Lieutenant Kotler. No one at the table stepped in to stop Lieutenant Kotler punishing Pavel for his accident, perhaps because the bystander effect was in place.

The bystander effect refers to cases in which individuals do not offer any means of help to a victim when other people are present. Basically, when multiple people are present, and something bad happens to someone, each person believes that the other will step in to stop it, but as each person thinks this, nobody steps in at all.

Have you ever been guilty of this? Have you seen this happen? Or maybe, did you ignore the bystander effect and step in? Explain.

To pass the time at "Out-With" he also goes exploring to discover new things.

If you were an explorer and could go anywhere in the world, where would you like to go exploring? Explain.
What is there that you would like to explore?

Blog 15 - Wednesday, November 18th, 2015

** Only one (1) Blog this Week **

Your BLOG topic is FREE CHOICE!  You could blog about whatever it is you want, except what you've already blogged about!  You could go on a rant or you could simply blog about something important to you.

I highly recommend that you go OUTSIDE the BOX! Be creative and write about something you feel important or something you would like to tell your audience.

You must remember your audience.  It is not simply me (Ms. Green) reading this blog!
If you will be ranting about a certain individual, you need to leave their name out of this.  You could give them a pseudonym or simply leave their name as anonymous.
Make sure your language is appropriate.  Do not go on swearing tangents.

In the novel, Bruno is a 9 -year-old boy who asks a lot of questions, loves adventures, hates his big sister, and often ignores the rules that are in place.

Think back to when you were around Bruno's age.

What kind of child were you?
Were you similar to Bruno? Explain.

(Ask your parents for help with this! I'm sure they can tell you.)

In class yesterday (Tuesday, Nov. 3rd), we spoke about authority figures.

Imagine being the authority figure for a day at school and you were allowed to make one (1) new school rule. What would it be, and what would the consequence be if anyone broke that rule?

Explain.

Have you ever had to move away?

Yes?  No?

Imagine you were just told you had to move house, far away, just like Bruno.

What/Who would you miss most? How do you think you would handle this?

Blog 9: Monday, October 26th, 2015

Last week was Digital Citizenship Week.

An important part of my English class is to make you aware of what you post on-line and what it means to be a good digital citizen.  Being a good digital citizen includes:
- being aware of your digital footprints;
- demonstrating safe and respectful online etiquette;
- not cyberbullying, sexting, or posting inappropriate photos and/or videos,
- making important decisions about what to post to social media sites; and,
- not downloading or uploading inappropriate content

For this blog, I would like you to CREATE an important Digital Citizenship message using MEMES!

A meme in a generic message about a behaviour that is passed around on-line.

Using memegenerator.net or makeameme.org you will have to create a MEME about being a GOOD Digital Citizen.  You could share or e-mail me (gkatz@lbpearson.ca) the meme and then post your explanation about the meme on the blog site.

Have Fun!

For this blog, take a selfie with someone you feel deserves a BIG THANK YOU!
E-mail the picture to gkatz@lbpearson.ca

Don't forget to write your explanation on this blog site!

Have fun.
