From the novel Monster, we learn that Steve is writing his life out as a movie and claims his version to be the true version of what happened. As we continue to read we will see that Steve includes several flashbacks to when he was a child, or even a few weeks prior to the murder.

Growing up in the west island, I have always felt safe. I have never feared walking down the street alone, or even waiting at a bus stop at night on my own. I wish everyone could feel  as safe in their neighborhood as I do in mine.
