Jeannette's dad, Rex Walls, teaches Jeannette some very valuable lessons:

"how to straddle a wild dog and break his neck, [and] where to hit a man in the throat so you kill him with one powerful jab" (Walls 24)

What is a valuable lesson your dad (or mom) has taught you?
Why is it so valuable? Explain.

  1. The most valuable lesson my parents have taught me is to admit mistakes. This is one on the many valuable lessons my parents taught me while I was growing up. I know it isn't easy to admit your mistakes because as a child I always got into trouble. The consequences are much more severe if you lie and try to get away with your mistake. It takes more than one lie to cover up your mistake. If you were to be telling the truth you will be saving time, and you might not even get punished because you owned up to what you did wrong and you will have learnt your lesson. This also makes you a better person because you don't lie as much.

  2. A valuable lesson that my parents have taught me is to know my right from wrong, by teaching me right and wrong I know not to hit or be mean to people. It also taught me how to share and how to be nice to others. This lesson is very valuable because now I know how to do the right things instead of the wrong.

  3. A valuable lesson my parents have taught me to be kind. You need to treat others the way you want to be treated. To find a good friend, you need to be a good friend. They also brought me up having to say the classic; Please, and thank you.. ect.

  4. I think my dad has taught me many valuable lessons. But I think the best one was to keep your head down and do your work. Basically what he means is that whenever you feel like you have a lot of distractions or things that annoy you in your day to day life to just push them aside. It does nothing to make a big deal out of something, because no matter how annoying or distressed you feel about a particular thing or person you most likely can’t change your situation. So if you keep your head down, and do your work everything will eventually fall into place. I think this lesson is valuable because you will always come across things that distress but you can’t change, so if you stay focused on the important things and disregard unimportant things, everything will be okay.

  5. A valuable lesson that one of my parents taught me is to not lie. Even tough it can be tempting sometimes like if I do bad on a test they will eventually find out and get even more mad, so I tend to not lie. The reason why I find this as such a valuable lesson is to make me a better person and always think about why would I do that if I have to lie to someone.

  6. One of the most valuable lessons my mom has taught me is honesty. Growing up I didn’t lie much but when I did and she found out, I got in serious trouble. She gave me good examples of how speaking the truth is always the best alternative and that the most important thing is to keep honest to yourself. Everytime I need her help and advice she will reinforce those values and I really appreciate the way she raised me.

  8. One of the lessons my dad taught me was to work hard in life. Because your not going to go anywhere in life if you don't work hard in school or even at sports,so I think that working hard is a lesson you have to teach everyone one because most people like to do the things easier but in life you need to work hard at your goals so you can succeed.

  10. My dad taught me that I have to try to do my best in everything I do. Doesn't matter what is it, if it is a school work or something really important: always do your best! He also taught me that I can actually do better than I think I can, I just have to believe in myself and work hard! All this lessons helped me to be the person I am today and I am really grateful for them.

  12. Well an important lesson my parents tought me was to never eat chewed gum. It's kind of obvious but still can save my life. If I took some gum off the bottom of a seat off of a city bus I can get diseases and die. Its important because I can get very sick if my parents didnt tell me not to eat chewed gum.

  13. The most valuable lesson that my parents taught me is to never lie. They taught me that lying will never get you anywhere in life and you will only have regrets if you lie. I am personally not the best at lying, and when I do tell you a lie, I will most likely feel very bad, and tell you the truth in the same day I told you the lie. It is a lifeskill that I believe is very useful and I am very thankful my parents for teaching me this lesson.

  14. First of all we should all say a valuable lesson we’ve all learned from our parents is to walk and talk. They also help with homework but besides that parent are usually working and you have to figure out things yourself which you could also call that a valuable lesson because it helps you solve your own problems in the future.

  15. a very important lesson that my dad has thought me to always be the best that I can. Hes always told me that we need to learn to except ourselves and love ourselves before anything else because that's the key to happiest is to expect yourself and that's always stick because if you dont love yourself how are you supposed to love others. Ill carry that lesson for the rest of my life.
