Jeannette is singled out by her professor for not understanding the plight (predicament) of homeless people.  Instead of defending herself, she keeps quiet.

Why does Jeannette keep quiet?

Do you think homelessness is a choice?

Explain.

  1. Jeannette keeps quiet because she is ashamed of her past. Homelessness is not a choice. Unless for some odd reason you want to be homeless than it is a choice. Most people when they're homeless it is because when they have no money, can't get a job, or can't afford a house. Also a lot of homeless people suffer from mental illnesses.

    1. I think you have a good point, and it's very common people with mental disabilities to live like this.

  2. I think Jeanette is really embarrassed and insecure about her past and parents because she doesn't know how people will react if they know. I think that sometimes it is not a choice, life just happens and people end up on the streets. But, sometimes it is a choice. When homeless people are offered jobs and help and they decline it, they are making the choice to keep living that way.

  3. She keeps quiet because she is embarrassed that she has a home to live in and goes to college and makes money meanwhile her parents are on the streets picking out of dumpsters to get food. She can't argue her case because some people don't understand that her parents want to be homeless. I don't think anyone wants to truly be homeless her parents say they do but I don't really thinks so. They just don't want to ask for a lot from their kids.

  4. I think Jeanette Walls keeps quiet because hes scard that the people will make fun of her and they'll also say why are you not helping your mom and dad so then they wont be homeless and she will be blamed. I think homelessness can be a choice but sometime its not a choice.

  5. If anything Jennette understands the plight of homelessness more than everyone in that room. But she didn’t speak up because she felt shame, she didn’t want others to know the truth. She also didn’t want to risk loosing something she worked so hard for. I think in most cases being homeless is not a choice. There a times in some peoples lives where everything crashes and everything they have known vanished, or works out for the worst. And the result of this is becoming homeless. But, there are some people who choose to be homeless. I know this because I know someone who, at the time, considered becoming homeless although they had a perfectly good shot of not being homeless. But what I’ve noticed is that this person wasn't thinking right, and wasn't in there right state of mind. But I also think that there might be some people out there who genuinely want to be homeless, I’ve never head of it, and I’ve never known anyone personally that felt this way. And if there where people who felt this way, I think there would be a small minority of them.

I think that sometimes homelessness is a choice. Because sometimes they don't try and look pretty happy. But sometimes it's financial troubles and it's hard for them to pick themselves up. And Jeanette kept quiet because she didn't want to explain herself and everything. And she didn't want people looking at her differently because her parents were homeless

  7. Jeannette is keep's quiet because I think that if she tell's the people what her parents are going threw and share's her opinion she might be thought of differently and I think she's very comfortable about how things are going with her living state that she's it will change for the worst. I think that hommlessness can be a choice but it also might be because of bead luck there are plenty of stoires of people losing there jobs and death's in the family that sink things down the drain, then again there a people with choices and even sometimes its not there fault because those people who make those decisions might have a mental illness and that's how things end up so it really depends homelessness can because of anything.

    2. I do agree with you to a certain point but sometimes people just have no choice... like Boden said maybe they cant afford an apartment. Or they just cant find a job.

  8. she keeps quiet because she doesnt want anyone to find out that her parents are homeless because if they do find out they will probably be getting mad & asking question to Jeannette because they will think that she is not helping them at all & leaving her own parents on the streets. Homelessness is not a choice because you can be trying to take care of your family & u lose all your money & u have live there its no choice to live on the streets but if u do wanna live on the streets well good luck.

  9. I think Jeanette keeps quiet because she doesn't want anyone to think of her different or as someone inferior to others because of her parents. She is in a good position now and she doesn't want to screw anything up. I think you can get homeless by choice but other times it is not your fault. If you keep buying pointless items almost everyday that's by choice and you're probably going to end up poor. If you grow up in a family with issues like Jeanette's you have a harder time being successful and you will be homeless for a while.

  10. I think she keeps it quite because she is embarrassed that she is really rich and her parents are living like if they where homeless. So the main reason she didn't tell anyone is that she thinks that people will judge her and won't see her as a smart person and just a daughter of a homeless family. I don't think that being homeless is a choice I think its mostly bad luck and a bit of bad decision. Because nobody what's to be homeless, but sometimes people make bad decision and end up homeless. However sometimes it can be bad luck like you lose your job and you have no money to buy food and get a house.

    1. I agree, she is doesn't want people to think she is selfish because she is living in a really expensive house and has a job and her parents are sleeping on park benches and digging out of garbage cans for food.

  11. I think Jeannette just kept quiet because her parents and family is poor so she didn’t really want to say anything to her class and to her professor about it. I think being homeless is not a choice because some people could be trying to support their family and lose all their money or they could be sick and not be able to work and lose money. So no I don’t think being homeless is a choice because the majority of people in this world do not want to be homeless.

  12. I think that Jeanette keeps quiet because she doesn't want people to think about her a some sort of monster that lets her parents live on the street while she lives in luxury. She has accomplished so much and she just doesn't want to lose all of it, because people find out the truth. I believe that homelessness is not a choice. They either had problems as a child or something bad happened to them causing them to be homeless. Or maybe they have drug addiction or they might have a criminal record causing them to have difficulty to get a job. There are so many factors that play into it, nobody just wakes up one day and says "I'm going to be homeless!". In jeannette's parents case they have both have probably had rough childhoods that caused them to act this way.

  13. I Believe what she is doing is smart because if she spoke up than that will make everyone know her as the girl that homeless and that might lower her self esteem which will lower her marks which will kick her out of college.

  14. Homelessness will be a choice sometimes. Jeanette keep quiet in class because she feel ashamed. They may askHow could a student is studying in the college with her parents on the street? That doesn't make any sense. For those reason, Jeantte keep quiet. But that's not she fault. Her parents stay away from warm house to be homeless. That's their choice. They can have a job to severe themself, but they refused. That's why I think homeless is a choice sometimes.

  15. I think homelessness is almost 95% of the time not a choice, whether you can't pay rent or can't afford to live in a building or even with others. Some people that live in warmer places might prefer to live on the streets if they have like a trailer or RV to live in but if they are just homeless with absolutely no where to go they might have mental disabilities that are taking over their life and they might not be able to completely cope with them. Some people are homeless because they can't afford rent and drugs and they choose drugs over rent so they technically chose to be homeless

  16. Honestly being homeless could actually be a choice because just like in the book the parents chose to be homeless and they enjoyed it, so maybe there could be more people like Jeanette's parents who are willing to be homeless and like that kind of lifestyle. Jeanette keeps quiet because she doesnt want people to know about her parents so she doesnt get embarrassed and everyone she is friends with stops talking to her. I dont know that is just my opion.

  17. Jeannette keeps quiet because shes not proud of who she is. She goes to a private university and she has a good reputation so she doesnt want people to know she has come from the dumps. Honestly homelessness is not a choice because who in the right mind would want to spend countless hours on the streets begging for money or food. A homeless man makes about 8 dollars all day that means standing in a spot in the hot sun/cold weather strong winds. I don' t think people would enjoy that. Sure there are some really shitty people in this world who beg for the extra money but that is the only time i can think of homelessness as being a choice or else it is not a choice.

  18. Jeanette keeps quiet because she is ashamed of who she was, of her parents, of where she grew up. She wants to erase the past and start new, she doesn't want to remember who she was. Homeless could be a choice. A choice if you are given opportunities to succeed and put effort in your school and to find work. Not a choice, if you grew up the hard way. Maybe with struggling parents, who either ignore, abuse or don't support their kids like in Jeanette's situation. Jeanette's parents had the choice not to be homeless, if they would have looked for work, her mother sell her land and manage their money better.

  19. I think Jeanette keeps quiet about this because she is embarrassed about how she practically did live on the streets and because her parents live on the streets. I think homelessness can be a choice but I think that it is because of a choice they made throughout their lives that caused their homelessness. Jeanette also knows how people on the street live because when she visits her parents she learns about how people who are homeless act.

  20. I think that Jenneatte stayed quiet after the argument because she was embarrassed about how her parents are homeless and live on the streets of New York City. No matter what Lori, Brian and Jenneatte do to help their parents, they refuse all of it. I also think that Jeneatte is afraid of people finding out that her parents are homeless. I think being homeless is your choice because you've made the decisions in your life that got you to where you are today.
